Tips for Planning a Spring Break Vacation on a Budget

Spring break on a budget is totally doable—you just have to be a little strategic and a little flexible. Here are some tried-and-true tips that actually make a difference.

1. Be flexible with where and when

Shift your dates by a few days if you can—flying mid-week is often much cheaper.

Look for “shoulder season” destinations where spring is nice but crowds aren’t wild yet (think early March vs late March).

2. Let deals pick the destination

Use tools like Google Flights “Explore,” Skyscanner, or Hopper to find the cheapest places to fly from your city.

If you’re driving, search within a 4–6 hour radius—gas + cheap lodging often beats flights.

3. Split costs with friends

Vacation rentals (Airbnb/VRBO) get way cheaper per person with a group.

Look for places with kitchens so you can cook some meals instead of eating out every time.

4. Book the big stuff early, the small stuff later

Lock in flights and lodging as soon as you see a good deal.

Tours and activities often don’t sell out—or are cheaper booked locally.

5. Choose budget-friendly destinations

Some consistently affordable spring break options:

Domestic: New Orleans, Austin, San Diego (if booked early), Smoky Mountains, South Padre Island

International: Mexico (CancĂșn outside peak week, Puerto Vallarta), Colombia, Costa Rica, Portugal

6. Watch the “hidden” costs

Resort fees, baggage fees, parking, and transportation can sneak up fast.

Public transit–friendly cities save a lot vs renting a car.

7. Prioritize experiences, not everything

Pick 1–2 “must-do” activities and keep the rest low-cost (beaches, hikes, walking tours, free museums).

Free events, festivals, and local markets = great vibes for $0.

8. Set a daily spending cap

Decide your daily budget before you go.

Use one card or a notes app to track spending so it doesn’t quietly spiral.

9. Use rewards and student perks

Credit card points, airline miles, hotel rewards—now’s the time.

If you’re a student, always ask about student discounts (they’re more common than you think).

10. Pack smart

Avoid checked bag fees by packing light.

Bring basics like sunscreen, reusable water bottles, and snacks—they’re way pricier at tourist spots.

Five Tips for Keeping New Years Resolutions

Setting goals gives direction and purpose to our efforts, helping us focus time and energy on what truly matters. Clear goals turn vague intentions into actionable plans, making progress measurable and motivating. They also provide a sense of accountability and achievement, reinforcing confidence as milestones are reached. Without goals, it’s easy to drift; with them, growth becomes intentional and meaningful. Make it specific and realistic: Clear, achievable goals are easier to stick to than vague or overly ambitious ones. Break it into small steps: Focus on consistent daily or weekly actions instead of the end result. Track your progress: Writing things down or using an app helps you stay accountable and motivated. Plan for obstacles: Decide in advance how you’ll handle setbacks so they don’t derail you. Build in rewards and support: Celebrate milestones and involve friends or routines that reinforce the habit.
